CONTROLOGY PILATES METHOD.........WORKING FOR LIFELONG RECOVERY

Contrology Pilates Method is recommended by Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Surgeons and GP’s as a safe, long term solution to their patients’ injuries, pain and health issues.

'Many years ago I suffered a neck and back injury…..  I am now at a level of fitness that I never would have thought achievable.  I am sure that without the encouragement and enthusiasm of Karin and her team this would not have been possible....'  Alison Ascot

INJURY REHABILITATION- Chronic/Acute

Sports related..Work related..Accident related..Whiplash..Rotator Cuff..Carpel Tunnel..Frozen Shoulder.. Spinal Injury..Knee Damage, Ligament/Cartelidge ...Hip Replacement Rehabilitation...Feet, Orthotics or no Orthotics?.Shoulder/Arm issues, movement limitation..

Whilst we have learned a great deal from the concept of 'muscles' that has held sway over anatomy, physiotherapy and training, the emerging research on the fascia and extracellular matrix makes it clear that the body organises itself around complex chains within the 'neuromyofascial web' (Thomas Myers). Every muscle in the body is surrounded by a smooth fascial sheath, every muscular fascicule and fibril are surrounded by fascia . When an area is injured, whether it's 'muscle', connective tissue, fascia, tendon or some combination of these elements (but most injuries are soft tissue injuries), the body handles this inflammatory response of the tissues to trauma through a hyperplasia of the affected tissue followed by a fibrous healing, the laying down of a less elastic, second grade, poorly vascularized scar tissue to protect the involved areas. Adhesions occur wherever damage and inflammation have occurred and they limit both strength and range of motion.

Once there is fibrous healing these adhesions pull us out of a three dimensional orientation with gravity. As a muscle tendon begins to stretch and encounters an adhesion, the muscle contracts to prevent any further stretching and to protect the area involved.

The result is that the seeming 'muscles' involved are not as strong and the range of motion is limited in the involved joint.

The Contrology Studio Apparatus and how it can help you.

The studio apparatus, developed by Joseph Pilates, is designed to support the body's weight while the springs connect to the deepest inner musculature, the body's inner axis of support. Rather than focusing on the strain or tone of each individual muscle, we can look for and influence the appropriate 'tension' along the body's myofascia , the connecting lines through the body's fabric - muscle and fascia,  hence 'myofascia' -   enabling you to support and 'renegotiate' with the body's 'moving mechanics' to support the strain or injury both uniformly and multi directionaly.  A multitude of movements with a low number of repetitions are tailored to the individual, with precise instruction emphasizing the 'unity' of each movement to achieve maximum and sustainable results.  Working with the muscles over their longest range and building a healthy ‘elasticity’ in the tissue, Contrology re-educates the body creating a balanced structure around a strong central axis; it is so precise and so ‘mindful’ that the results remain and sustain forever.

However, supporting to free the 'adhesion' is only part of the battle

Freeing the adhesion is only part of the battle. Each person has a subtle, complex and unconscious perception of his or her own body. When you have pain and limitation of motion due to an injury, you adapt your body image to fit that limitation. This unconscious mental adaptation can often persist long after the injury has been resolved without a“re-education”. It isn't enough to clear up a problem, we also have to convince the body that the problem is gone. Otherwise, it persists in favouring the area that was causing them pain. Patients may often limp for several months after a hip or leg problem has been eliminated, so the most important part of the recovery is in making both the mind and the body brain aware so that both can adapt a new behavior to the new physical reality.

A Re-education!

The movements  in the Contrology Studio mimic ‘life’ (walking, standing, running, lifting, climbing the stairs, getting up from a chair, professional movement and all sports ) so that the supported and renegotiated movements learnt and challenged within the Studio will be ‘remembered’ by the body  (the Olympic brain) when it performs these tasks in life.  The Studio gives you the ‘tools’ to take charge of your body so that you can prevent strain patterns re-occurring and you can maximize strength, performance and ease of movement in all that you do.

Contrology is a supreme rehabilitaiton programme to correct and re-educate the bodies moving ‘mechanics’.  Whatever your chosen activity or sport (walking, running, golf, tennis, dancing, horse riding), Contrology can take you back there!  and prevent further injuries by creating uniform strength to gain maximum efficiency and therefore 'fitness' throughout the whole body … ask the New Zealand All Blacks or the Professional Footballers Association!
